Wgtn hockey win over Japan
PA Wellington Wellington beat the Japanese men’s hockey team 1-0 on the synthetic surface of the Mount Albert Stadium yesterday. Japan has now had three losses and a draw from its four tour matches. The Japanese team was expected to give an improved display yesterday as the Wellington match was the first tour game on an artificial surface. However, Wellington had the skills and the determination to match anything Japan could produce, and the first half saw good hockey from the home team. The Japanese made Wellington work harder in a bid to counter the close man-to-man marking, but Wellington settled down to a pattern and thanks to some superb running from international Laurie Gallen, initiated the attacks and dominated the first spell in territory.
