Japan criticised
Dr Helen Caldicott, head of an American nuclear disarmament group, has accused the Japanese Government of bowing to American pressure to build up its military power and of betraying its own ban on nuclear weapons. “The Japanese Government is lying to its people, is being hypocritical, and is hiding behind the atomic grief of the past while actively participating in the atomic annihilation of the future,” she said. Dr Caldicott, president of Physicians for Social Responsibility, spoke at the invitation of the Japan Scientists’ Association for the fortieth anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan had violated its policy of not producing, possessing or allowing nuclear weapons into the country by allowing United States ships and submarines carrying missiles to dock, she said. — Tokyo.
