Cyclist in fine form

David Lauder, a very much in-form Canterbury cyclist, is the only rider from the province to be chosen for the New Zealand team to race in the demanding four-day tour of Tasmania which starts next Tuesday. His performance in finishing third in the Air New Zealand race led to him being picked for the team. Other members of the New Zealand team are Blair Cox, Karl Wood, and Tom Bamford, all of Auckland, and Warren Sharrock, of Wanganui. Bamford was a Hornby rider before transferring to Auckland. Before Lauder’s return to Canterbury he was based in the Hastings area, and had a considerable amount of

success riding off the scratch mark. He has performed well against the former New Zealand repesentatives Robert Oliver and Alan Black. Now racing again for Hornby, he has had a fair

measure of success in claiming third place, in the 100 km Healing Waikari Classic, and finishing third in the Air New Zealand Canterbury qualifying tour. At the two-day Air New Zealand final in Auckland, Lauder finished sixth in the 50km first stage, narrowly avoiding an eight-man crash in the line sprint. In the 130 km second stage, which included a hill climb, Lauder finished third, and was third over all on the first day. In the third 150 km stage, Lauder was strong on the daunting Bombay Hills climb, and kept both Woods and Cox honest. Lauder then unleashed an impressive final burst to clinch third place. He was also third in general classifications.
