Women suggest alternative tour

PA Wellington A women’s lobby group wants the disappointed All Blacks to make a tour with a difference. The Women’s National Abortion Action Campaign (Wonaac) yesterday said the abandoned tour of South Africa should be replaced with a tour of New Zealand by the All Blacks promoting condom usage and male sexual responsibility. The worthy aim of such a tour would be the prevention of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease, said Wonaac’s spokeswoman, Di Cleary. “Arrogant chauvinism and macho insensitivity helped bring rugby to this crisis.

“A tour promoting male sexual responsibility could be the first step in shedding this stereotype and healing divisions between men and women in our own sexist society,” Wonaac said. Ms Cleary told NZPA later that Wonaac was committed to the promotion of condoms to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually - transmitted diseases. The lobby group was looking for a star — even a movie star — to launch the promotion, but so far none had come forward. She described the idea of a team doing the promotion as an inspired one, adding that it struck her while she was doing the shopping last week.
