Chch pilot leading in Italy

A Christchurch pilot, Ray Lynskey, was leading the open class of the world gliding championships after the fifth day of racing at Reiti, Italy, during the week-end.

Lynskey, flying a borrowed Schemp-Hirth Nimbus 3 glider, followed up fourth, second, third, and sixth placings with a win on

the fifth day of the championships. He narrowly missed a win on the second day, finishing less than Ikm behind the winner, Klaus Hollinghaus, the German designer for Schemp-Hirth. Lynskey’s three New Zealand team-mates were having less success. Bruce Drake and Terry

de Lore, both of Christchurch, were lying thirtysixth and thirty-seventh respectively after the third day’s competition in the racing class. De Lore is thought to have improved to thirtieth place out of 47 pilots on the fourth day, although further details were unavailable. Peter Lyons, of Hastings,

was twenty-sixth out of 30 pilots in the standard class after the fifth day. The New Zealanders were finding the visibility poor compared with conditions they were used to at home, and Lynskey was troubled by sunstroke.

The championships will end on August 9.
