Harewood heads hockey
Liquorland Harewood moved back to the head of the Noel Leeming Christchurch senior men’s hockey championship with a 4-1 win over Rangiora in a deferred game played at Nunweek Park yesterday. Harewood’s win put it a point ahead of University and three points ahead of Selwyn in the race for the championship shield. All three teams have three games left in the championship. In spite of having to make two changes to its attack, Harewood was always in control against Rangiora although by the interval it was only one goal ahead. Harewood was without its left flank attack of lan Riach and Chris Leslie which has served it superbly this season. Riach was not available and leaves for Perth on Thursday for the remainder of the season. Leslie was injured, but hopes to be fit to play for New Zealand against Japan in Wellington next weekend.
Graham Innes scored the only goal of the first half after a swift attack down the right and a cross. Two of the second-half goals came from penalty strokes. They were converted by Glenn Hayde and David Penfold. Pat Hayde scored the third goal from field play. In spite of its attempts to mark them closely, the Harewood forwards always managed to find space to mount attacks and Penfold at centre-half was used effectively to vary the direction of the attacks. Greg Cowles, who has spent much of the season on the sideline, played soundly at left half. Rangiora tried valiantly to put passes together on attack but lacked the control and urgency to pressure the Harewood defence frequently. Five minutes from full-time, Rangiora was rewarded for its attempts when Martin Amos scored from a penalty corner.
