Top sportsman dies

Stan Whiteford, who died last week at the age of 73, was a man well known for his involvement in two sports in Canterbury — rugby and bowls. In rugby he was a senior player (at the age of 16) and coach for Linwood before turning to refereeing. In the late 1940 s and through the 1950 s he was one of the top referees in Canterbury and

actually filled the No. 1 spot for six years. He received many national appointments, including two inter-island games and an All Black trial. He was on the panel for the epic series against the Springboks in 1956. Mr Whiteford took up bowls in 1962 and he soon became a top player at the St Albans club. He won many titles in the club, but 1

a Christchurch centre success eluded him until last year when he won the prestigious champion-of-cham-pions singles. In all his endeavours, Mr Whiteford was a very meticulous man. As a referee he had a reputation for always being in the right spot and even before he won his big singles title he was highlyrated as a bowler of precise drawing ability. k i
