French garner views
NZPA-Reuter Paris All South Pacific countries neighbouring New Caledonia were in favour of some form of independence for the troubled French territory, a senior French External Relations Ministry official said yesterday. Jean-Michel Baylet, just back from a tour of the area, said that while some of the South Pacific States were in favour of “French efforts to achieve independence in New Caledonia in
association with France, others were for a hardline attitude, favouring immediate independence.” The five countries he had visited — Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga and Western Samoa — viewed France’s presence in the area as a “stability and security factor,” he asserted.
Mr Baylet said that one of the aims of his trip was to explain to the other countries in the area France’s nuclear policy and its plans
