Victims’ jobs protected
PA Wellington Providing job protection to victims of sexual harassment will be a priority in the coming award round, says the Clerical Workers’ Union The Southland union’s secretary, Mrs Eileen McGregor, said yesterday that a recent survey by the union showed that one-third of harassed workers re-
signed or were sacked as a direct result of sexual harassment. She said the union was horrified at the situation and would push for award protection for members making such complaints, in the clerical workers’ award round beginning in October. The proposed award clause would require employers to respond to complaints promptly, seriously
and with sensitivity. “Under the current award, the union can only get legal redress for them after they have left the job. “Our proposed clause would provide a proper procedure for dealing with sexual harassment complaints and ensure that the worker would not lose her job while a complaint was being investigated,” Mrs McGregor said.
