Docked pay angers M.P.
PA Gisborne Civil defence laws will have to be ehanged urgently after some workers who stayed home during last Friday’s flood were not paid, says the Member of Parliament for Gisborne, Mr Allan Wallbank. People were advised in radio Broadcasts to stay at home, while others were unable to go to work because of flood waters. Some Gisborne employers refused to pay wages for the day. f
Mr Wallbank said yesterday that it was an “incredibly stupid” piece of legislation and the Governmnet should change it forthwith. He said he would take up the matter when he returned to Parliament on Monday. The whole thing was “grossly unfair” and he said he was most disturbed it had happened. There was a moral obligation on the part of employers to pay their workers and he asked them to do so.
