Another side of Hollywood
Slow Fade. By Rudolph Wurlitzer. Pan, 1985. 211 pp. $10.95 (paperback). Wurlitzer has a keen eye and ear. His ability to recreate locations and draw caricatures adds much to the wit of this black novel. His protagonist is a failing, aging Hollywood director. We learn that he was once the best director of westerns. He is grizzled, boozy, and opportunistic, and he is failing to bring in the latest western on schedule or budget. His life is a mess. He has a drugged son, a wife who plays around out of boredom, and various sordid hangers-on who are filming a candid “doco” on his disintegrating life. They follow him on his final trip from Hollywood, via Mexico, to his childhood Eskimo village. This is not a tale for those who like their Hollywood heroes to die cleanly. — Ruth Zanker.
