Merivale rates
Sir,—Today I received a letter from the Christchurch City Council concerning the Merivale rates. The leaflet stated that valuation is the key to rate levels. This is rubbish, as the following figures reveal. A property of four ownership-type rental flats in Cashel Street recently had its valuation increased by 113 per cent from $44,500 to $95,000. The rates moved from $959 to $913 — a 5 per cent decrease. My home’s valuation increased by 135 per cent, from $50,000 to $117,500 and the rates from $963 to $1691 — a 75 per cent increase. The above figures make the paragraph headed “Valuations the key” a mockery, so why doesn’t the council admit it is its rating system, not the valuations, that decides a ratepayer’s increase or decrease in rates. Therefore, as the motion’s proposer, I urge all Merivale residents to pay only a 10 per cent increase on last year’s rates until a more equitable system of rating is introduced.—Yours, etc., MIKE ROBERTSON. July 30, 1985.
