Paoakalani looks good prospect at Hastings
Special correspondent Palmerston North Paoakalani and Lenten could make it a double for the greys on the opening day of the Hawke’s BayDannevirke Hunt Clubs' meeting at Hastings tomorrow. Both horses have the ability to show to advantage in the respective legs of the T.A.B. double. Paoakalani will contest the Springvale Handicap and Lenten is in the Okawa Handicap. Paoakalani meets some useful opposition in the class two Springvale, but he has hinted that a winning turn may not be far away
with steady improvement in each of his three recent races. Now trained at Levin by W. D. (Bill) Masters. Paoakalani has had only 20 starts and he is now starting his six-year-old season. His two wins were with Denis Matthews at Waikanae but he has been with Masters for his present campaign. The obvious threat will be the versatile Doctor Sam. The former northerner won an amateur riders’ race at Wanganui before taking a double over hurdles, the most recent run being at the Opunake meeting on Wednesday.
Along with the top weight, Cuchulainn, which has been racing consistently they may be the ones to test Paoakalani. There is still plenty of form in the race with the likes of Brager, Pirganella, Peace Seeker and Rojika engaged. Lenten won on the track at the Hawke's Bay winter meeting and he appeals as being capable of repeating the effort in the second leg, the Okawa Handicap. The first is not strong being headed by the Marshtrained Misty Anne. She has not raced since late may but is likely to be produced in forward condition by her trainer.
