Beta schedule drops
Beta lambs with carcase weights of no more than 7kg will be worth $2.60 a kilogram to farmers this season, a 40c drop from last year’s price. The strengthening value of the New Zealand dollar was a main reason for the lower schedule price, said a spokesman yesterday for three South Island-based meat exporting companies in the Beta lamb trade. The
companies are Fort Export, Ltd, P.P.C.S., Ltd, and Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating, Ltd. Other causes of the schedule decrease include a weakening world market for lamb, and slight increases in killing charges. Beta lambs must be milkfed, no older than six weeks, and have a maximum carcase weight of 7kg. The main market is Italy.
