Group fails to stop hunt for whales
NZPA-Reuter London A conservation group said yesterday it had failed to block what it called a massive and brutal whale hunt in the Faroe Islands after its members were kicked and punched by hunters who tried to sink their dinghy. The London-based Environmental Investigation Agency said in a statement that it had intervened on Sunday when more than 40 boats drove 200 pilot whales towards the Bay of Vestmann off the island of Streymoy in the north Atlantic. After launching the dinghy, which was rammed
by hunters, the group used a fog-horn like instrument to induce the whales to turn away from the shore towards the open sea. It later gave up as the kill proceeded and other hunters cut the rubber dinghy and kicked and punched the crew. Environmentalists allege that residents of the islands, which have home rule under the Danish Crown, slaughter thousands of whales—mainly for sport. The islands’ representative to the International Whaling Commission denied this recently, saying: “We eat all we catch.”
