Assurance on Boeing jets
PA Auckland The warning of cracks in the engine mountings of Boeing 747 jumbo jets is not relevant to Air New Zealand, the airline says. The Boeing company has warned airlines with 747 s that cracks have been discovered in the skin of one aircraft floor beam and in its engine mounting. Air New Zealand has not yet received the warning on the cracks in the floor beam, but the airline’s public relations manager, Mr Bob Wallace, said the warn-
ing about the engine mounting was not relevant to his company’s fleet of five 7475. He said the warning was for engine mounts on Pratt and Whitney and General Electric engines, not the Rolls-Royce models with which the Air New Zealand jumbos are equipped. In Sydney yesterday, a Qantas spokesman, Mr Mike Cottee, said there was no cause for alarm, because Qantas jumbos were examined regularly and no accidents had occurred from such cracks.
