Women’s sports groups to receive $30,000

PA Wellington About $30,000 of the $lOO,OOO in sports grants announced by the Government will be allocated to women’s sports organisations. The Minister of Recreation and Sport, Mr Moore, said when announcing the grants that he had been ‘‘particularly pleased” to see that women’s sports figured prominently. “It has been of concern to me that women’s sport has not been getting an equitable share of sports funding,” he said. The grants were given to sports groups planning international competition. They were allocated under a national scheme run by Mr Moore’s ministry, and on the recommendation of the New Zealand Sports Foundation. More than $20,000 has been set aside to help maintain New Zealand’s ranking at the top of the world in rowing and canoeing. The money, split between the two associations, will go towards the cost of sending teams to the respective world championships in Belgium next month.
