Oyster quotas not in force

Wellington reporter Daily quotas for the Bluff oyster catch have not been in force this year because of problems with a Ministry of Fisheries fishing restriction notice in the Gazette. The Bluff oyster fleet can still take only 115.000 sacks

between them this season, and the 5000-sack restriction per boat for the season remains. Sub-section 3 and 4 of section 11 of the Fisheries (Dunedin Commercial Fishing Restrictions) Notice quotes the year 1984, and so the Ministry has had no legal power to enforce the

restrictions during 1985. This mistake might have occurred because those drafting the notice were trying to date it, said the Ministry’s Dunedin regional fishery officer, Mr Barry Webster. Industrial troubles at Bluff meant that the 1985 oyster season got off to a very late start, but some boats have been able to profit from the absence of a daily quota to make up for the late start. A spokesman for Skeggs Fisheries, Mr Murray Tait, said that some days Skeggs had had the chance to try to make up for the late start, but that there.was no way any boat was going to reach its limit of 5000 sacks for the season.
