Tariffs on seed drills

Sir,—With regard to the tariffs on imported seed drills (“The Press,” July 19) I am compelled to express my complete dissatisfaction with the locally-made product. Since purchasing one of these last season I have been continually frustrated by the faults that have occurred with the machine and the inability of the manufacturers to satisfactorily remedy the situation, least of all acknowledge my correspondence. I believe that many other owners of the same drill would echo my sentiments and I fail to understand why a superior imported product should incur a tariff just to protect an inferior locally-made product. The state-

ment by the Minister of Trade and Industry to the effect that the imported product is more efficient and cost effective is, I believe, not a valid reason for protecting the locally-made product.—Yours, etc., MURRAY BISHELL. Blenheim, July 22, 1985.
