PA Auckland Records tumbled as hundreds of thousands of dollars changed hands for New Zealand paintings in Auckland last evening. A Goldie sold by Peter Webb Galleries at the Sheraton Hotel fetched $87,500, almost tripling the record for the painter’s work. Later a John Gully painting of Lake Wakatipu sold for $lO,OOO.
The highest recorded price for a New Zealand painting is $130,000, paid earlier this year by the National Art Gallery for a Colin McCahon painting, “Practical Religion”. More than 150 paintings were auctioned last evening as about 1000 people crammed into the Rangitoto Ballroom. Sales of jewellery and paintings passed $1 million about halfway through. the auction. V
