Coast coal for Huntly
Wellington reporter A clean air licence has been announced for the Huntly power station in Waikato that will allow the use of coals with a sulphur content higher than 0.5 per cent, including West Coast coal. The licence will be flexible enough to allow the Electricity Division of the Ministry of Energy to consider any coal as fuel for Huntly. But' the licence does not allow emission limits for
sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulates to be exceeded. These limits allow a maximum of 90 tonnes of sulphur dioxide to be emitted in a 24-hour period. Comment was made late last year on the sulphur content of West Coast coals being higher than the prescribed limit for sulphur content of fuel supplied to Huntly. West Coast interests approached the government on this aspect of fuel content.
