N.Z. 2000 Guineas now worth $120,000

The two major classics to be staged by the Canterbury Jockey Club next season will each carry a six-figure stake. This was revealed last evening when the club’s retiring chairman, Dr Jeff Louisson, presented his report at the annual meeting. Dr Louisson told members that because of generous sponsorship from Fel-

tex, Ltd, the stake for the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas, to be run at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November, would this year be $120,000. The stake for the race, to be known as the Feltex New Zealand 2000 Guineas, is $50,000 higher than for last year’s contest. Dr Louisson said that Feltex, Ltd, was one of two

new major sponsors this year. The other was Couplands Pies which was sponsoring the Couplands Pies Grand National Hurdles with a very significant sum. “Increased sponsorships through the efforts of a very active Promotion Committee, and increased subsidies from the New Zealand Racing Authority, have helped to increase stakes considerably,” he said. Dr Louisson said that last year’s major sponsors were Simms Jones, which sponsored the Chemico New Zealand Cup, and Wrightson Bloodstock, which sponsored the Wrightson One Thousand Guineas, the club’s first $lOO,OOO race. The importance of sponsorship in this age was emphasised by the club’s

honorary treasurer, Mr Russell Boyd, is his report. “Without sponsorship racing generally would be in a very sick state and we are most appreciative of the support that we have in the past received and continue to receive from our sponsors,” he said. In his report the retiring chairman said that the refurbished public stand had been of great value to the club, both on racedays, and at other times playing its part in producing a very good return from the new catering operation. Dr Louisson said that with the assistance of the New Zealand Racing Authority the club was at present refurbishing the stewards’ stand which should be ready for use at the Grand National meeting.
