Mr Anderton urges support for the arts

PA Wellington The member of Parliament for Sydenham, Mr Jim Anderton, whose daughter, Jillian, earlier this month won second place in the 1985 Dame Sister Mary Leo scholarship, has made a special plea for young artists. Speaking at the Ngaio

School’s winter lectures in Wellington on Monday evening, Mr Anderton said public support and assistance for the arts should be taken for granted. He said his daughter, a soprano, aged 23, had to survive on $5 an hour. “Jillian and many others like her get paid virtually nothing. At 23, 24, 25 and 26 these kids are really able to earn practically nothing. “They have to survive on fresh air and develop a creative talent at the same time. There is this misplaced mythology that artists only thrive when they are starving to death. “I don’t happen to believe that.” Mr Anderton said the arts should be an expanding part of New Zealand’s economic life. “The opportunities for enjoyment from artistic development have no visible limit,” Mr Anderton said. As part of her prize for second place in the Dame Sister Mary Leo scholarship, Jillian Anderton will compete in the Australian Aria Contest in Sydney early next month.
