Death penalty

Sir,—Your newspaper of July 15 contained an article from London’s “Daily Telegraph” on the increasing use of the death penalty in the United States. The statistics are grim, despite convincing arguments against the supposed deterrent value of the sentence. Amnesty International opposes the death penalty without reservation. It is a violation of the right to life which is proclaimed in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards. It is therefore disturbing that a number of member States of the United Nations persist in carrying out frequent executions. The continued use of such a cruel and inhuman punishment is surely indefensible. — Yours, etc., MARION CHRISTIE, for Amnesty International, Group 8., July 16, 1985.
