Nine cars in crash

PA Auckland A nine-car pile-up which blocked southbound lanes of Auckland’s southern motorway yesterday was caused by drivers “rubbernecking” to see two accidents, according to the Ministry of Transport. Mr Brian Vowell, a traffic officer at the Ministry’s motorway control office, said non-related accidents occurred on the northbound lanes just south of a midcity turnoff about 2.30 p.m. It appeared some drivers had lost concentration and control of their cars, he said. ■ ’ .. ■' • ' Cars spun as they braked to avoid other vehicles, setting up a chain reaction which left nine cars blocking the three southbound lanes.One person was treated at Greenlane Hospital for minorrimuries.
