Workers rescue woman

An elderly woman was helped from her smokefilled house in Strickland Street by staff of the Christchurch City Council’s parks and recreation department yesterday. Neighbours said yesterday that the men had been working at a reserve next to the house. After helping the woman

from her house, the men also kept the fire under control until the Fire Service arrived. Fire Service staff said the fire started in the hot-water cupboard in the kitchen about 3 p.m. Little damage resulted from the fire. The woman was taken to hospital for observation.
