Timely golf win
The Charteris Bay B golf team picked an opportune time to win the final of the Patterson Cup inter-zone competition. In the final against Burnham A, played at Hororata on Sunday in northwesterly winds which reached 60 knots, Charteris Bay B won, 5-3. The win came for Charteris Bay in the twenty-fifth anniversary of the club, and the Patterson Cup was donated by a member of the club, Mr Tom Patterson. Burnham A receives the H. C. Smart Cup as runner-up. Charteris Bay last won the event in 1971, and five of this year’s team were associated with that success. They were Ron Kennedy, lan Henderson, Gary Forsyth, Doug Cresswell and Peter Blunden. In 1971 they were complemented by George McFarlane, Chris Bird, Bruce Porteous and the late JoKn Parsons. Blunden, the most senior
member of the team at 72 years, turned the contest Charteris Bay’s way on Sunday when he recovered from 2 down with three holes to play to beat his opponent. 1 up. Charteris Bay B will now play the winner of the North Canterbury zone for the AshbyBergh Trophy at Rangiora on July 21, and Burnham A will meet the runner-up for the Hindon McGuire Cup on the same day. Morton. 2 and 1; R. Winters lost to K. Sisson, 4 and 3; D. Cresswell lost to B. Liddall, 3 and 2; J. Kay beat S. Cribb, 2 and 1; P. Blunden beat J. McAllister, 1 up.
