AUSTRALIA Market nears record

NZPA-Reuter Sydney Australian sharemarkets edged towards record highs yesterday, pushed up by keen trading in Myer scrip and a $5 increase in the gold price overnight, brokers said. They said a number of institutions were highly liquid after selling their Myer stock, and were competing for a limited amount of scrip across the market. More than 5.6 million Myer shares were traded, with the price rising 2c to 280. Market speculation was that Coles was poised to make a take-over bid for the retailer. Brokers said the Myer family and Coles were active buyers yesterday.
