Presentation of flag
Lyttelton primary school children took part yesterday in the re-enactment of a historic occasion which happened at Lyttelton 75 years ago. Two pupils of the Lyttelton Main School yesterday presented the curator of the port’s museum, Mr Baden Norris, with a replica of an ensign flown from the masthead of the Terra Nova, the vessel that took Captain Scott on his last voyage to Antarctica. The flag, which carries the New Zealand ensign and the inscription L.D.H.S. to Terra Nova, 1910, is now in the Lyttelton Museum. It is a replica of an ensign presented in 1910 by two girls of the Lyttelton District High School to Captain Scott’s brother-in-law, Lieutenant Wilfred Bruce. The whereabouts of the original ensign was a mystery
until last year, when the British National Maritime Museum at Greenwich started to make inquiries about a flag it had. Museum staff wrote to New Zealand to determine the meaning of the initials, L.D.H.S., embroidered on the flag. ARRIVALS Spirit of Free Enterprise (7 a.m.), 1204, Wellington (Pacifica).
