New buildings planned for Post Office

Post Office capital investments, planned for late 1985 and early 1986, all relate to new or altered post office buildings, except for telecom projects. In Riccarton the Post Office plans to build a new post office on land it has bought in Rotheram Street «' ist south of Riccarton oad. The existing post office on Riccarton Road and Rimu Stret was no longer adequate to cope as one of the busiest suburban offices in Christchurch, said the Christchurch District Chief Postmaster, Mr Syd Bradley. “We have prepared sketch plans only so far for the

new building,” he said. “In upper Riccarton we are also planning to build a new post office in each’ 1986. “When the old Upper Riccarton post office was demolished on Yaldhurst Road we leased a building in Riccarton Road as an interim measure. The new post office will be built on the Yaldhurst Road site.” In Rangiora a contract has been let to a local builder to do alterations costing $500,000 to the town’s post office later this year. On the Council Chambers’ side of the post office an addition will be built, and

the ground floor will be altered. The alterations were needed to keep up with increased business in Rangiora, Mr Bradley said. Similar work is planned for the Linwood post office on the corner of Stanmore Road and Worcester at a cost of $175,000. This will include additions to the back of the building and reorganisation inside. At East Linwood the post office building, on the corner of Aidwins Road and Linwood Avenue was likely to give way to a new post office in the new Linwood City shopping complex, Mr Bradley said. Another busy office which will be replaced is the Sydeham post office on the corner of Colombo Street and Brougham Street. “We have purchased a site on Colombo Street, next to Woolworths and have a new building in the planning stages,” Mr Bradley said. “A plan has also been drawn up for an extension to the Shirley Post Office on Marshland Road. The planned extension and re-

organisation will be done as soon as possible. The growth in the nearby shopping complex has brought many more customers to the post office and encouraged plans to expand the building.” A proposed shopping com?lex near the Halswell avern on Halswell Road might include a new post office, Mr Bradley said. “This new post office would include postal delivery and is expected to cost about $lOO,OOO. At Opawa the existing post office on Opawa Road is really on the wrong siide of the street in relation to the shopping facilities. “We have been offered accommodation for a post office as part of a new shopping area on the south side of the street which will include off-street parking. Construction of the new post office there is estimated to cost $180,000.” At Tinwald on the south side of Ashburton River, a post office will be added to the supermarket building. This plan is at the negotiation stage only.
