Prime stock prices up; yardings down

- Small yardings boosted prices for most types of prime stock at the Addington market yesterday. Prime hoggets had the biggest improvement, top quality hoggets rising $2 a head on last week’s rates. Beef prices increased slightly, particularly for better-finished steers and heifers, but light lamb values eased. Prime lambs A reduced level of competition from outside buyers caused prices for works-type lambs to weaken about $1 a head. Most light lambs sold between $22 and $26. However, the demand for heavier butchers’ lambs was steady and - prices for good quality lambs were on a par with last week’s. The over-all

quality of the butcher-type lambs was not quite up to tne standard of recent weeks. The yarding was 1180 compared with 1740 last week. Values were.— Heavy lambs, to $35. Medium lambs, $26 to $27.80. Prime sheep Prices for old ewes and hoggets improved for the second successive week. Local butchers keenly sought sheep which were in good order. Old ewes were generally $1 dearer than at last week’s market. Most ewes sold between $l7 and $24, depending on wool, and only light ewes made less than $l5. Some very light condition sheep were under $lO.

Good hoggets were at least $2 stronger than at last week’s

sale. Many medium hoggets fetched between $26 and $29, top woolly sheep reaching $34.80. The prime sheep yarding was 809 compared with almost 1100 last week. Values were.— Best old ewes, to $2l, with heavily woolled ewes to $24. Medium old ewes, $l7 to $l9. Light old ewes, $l4 to $l6, with very light ewes to $lO. Best hoggets, to $34.80.
