Midwifery
Sir,—lf the tremendous social services provided by New Zealand’s hospital and domiciliary midwives are not respected and protected by our members of Parliament, New Zealand will follow the example of the United States where the male-dominated and overly-technilogical obstetrics care has produced the home-birth backlash in a society that does not provide any midwives, and instead outlaws midwivery in many states. Of my five home-briths, three took place in the United States, two of those with an untrained midwife, one with no midwife and the last two in New Zealand with the expert care and understanding of a trained domiciliary midwife. Couples will not stop having homebirths and needing midwives just because the Government chooses to ignore their circumstances. New Zealand’s care for its mothers and children is a shining example to the rest of the world. Let us continue to provide safe birth services to all of our children. — Yours, etc., RUTHANNE WHITE.
