Women deacons approved

NZPA-Reuter London The Church of England yesterday gave the go-ahead for women to become ordained deacons, which could prepare the ground for the ordination of female priests. The decision, taken by a vote of 320 to 83 at the Church’s General Synod, now goes to Parliament. The change would allow women to style themselves “Reverend” and perform marriages and baptisms. But they would still be unable to give communion. The Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the church, has given his approval to the ordination of women and the issue is expected to be considered at the next General Synod in November. The Church Union, a high Church organisation, opposed yesterday’s decision. The Rev. Peter Geldard, its secretary, said that allowing female deacons would increase pressure for the ordination of female priests.
