New group chops posts

An anti-tour group has claimed responsibility for damage to goalposts at several Christchurch rugby grounds on Tuesday night. A man, who telephoned “The Press” yesterday, said that the No Tour Action Group was responsible for the attacks. He declined to give his name. “The Press” has not heard of the group before.

Two carloads of people drove round Christchurch chopping down posts at six grounds, including Waltham School, Burwood School, Queens Park School, and Burnside High School. The group also painted “Don’t go Warwick” on the pavement and walls of Burnside High School, a reference to Warwick Taylor, the All Black, who is also a physical edu-

cation teacher at the school. The acting principal of Burnside High School, Mr Jim Russ, said last evening that anti-tour graffiti had been sprayed round the school and one goalpost chopped down. “You cannot stop people doing these sorts of things, but all it has done is divert money and resources to clean up, which should be spent on education.” Mr Russ said that the goalpost chopped down was on a ground used largely by the school’s rugby league team. The man who telephoned “The Press” said that No Tour Action Group consisted of several people of different ages and occupations. It was not connected with any other anti-tour organisation. __
