Eddery wins jockey’s cup

NZPA Hamburg Pat Eddery, of Ireland, won the first European Jockeys Cup by beating a field Europe’s best riding talents. Eddery came out on top after the 12 jockeys competed for points in four races on West German horses drawn by lot. He won the “Silver Horse” Trophy, offered by a West German brewery, which put up sponsorship worth 250,000 marks (?NZ166,400). The Irishman won one race and had a second and third placing to finish with 16 points, three more than last season’s English champion jockey, the American Steve Cauthen who was second. Yves Saint-martin, 15 times champion jockey in France, shared third place with the Italian Gianfranco

Dettori on 12 points. The four jockeys scored a victory each on the Horn race track in an event introduced to add a little spice to what is normally a dull day during Hamburg Derby week. The surprise was the failure of Lester Piggott, of England, the bookmakers’ favourite to win the title, to finish in the first six in any of the races. He came last without a single point. Final standings:— Pat Eddery (Ireland) 16 points; Steve Cauthen (U.S.) 13; Gianfranco Dettori (Italy), and Yves Saint-Mar-tin (France) 12; Georg Bocskai (Austria) 9.5; Willie Carson (Scotland), and Freddie Head (France) 6; Peter Remmert (West Germany) 5; Brent Thomson (Australia) 3; Peter Alafi (West Germany) 2; Johan Stenstroem (Sweden) 1.5; Lester (England) 0.
