Lisa Hest has comfortable win

By

JEFF SCOTT

Lisa Rest firmed in favour for Saturday’s New Zealand Metropolitan meeting with a comfortable win at the Addington trials yesterday.

The Templeton-trained mare indicated that she had thrived since her purple patch of form on the Nel-son-Blenheim circuit by winning the C2 and faster pacers’ heat over 2600 m in 3min 28.25.

She improved from the rear on the outer to range up three wide to the leaders into the straight, and held out a spirited finish from Lightning Bolt by a neck. She was timed over her last 800 m in Imin o.ls, her closing 400 m in 29.9 s and was going well at the finish. She is to be driven by trainer, Ivan Schwamm, again on Saturday. Ricky May, who handled the mare on the Nelson-Blenheim circuit, will drive Counsel Bay. Lightning Bolt also impressed for the first leg of the T.A.B. double on Saturday, while a smart late finisher in Watbro Kilt also hinted that he could go an improved race on Saturday with his placing yesterday. He was hitting out well near the finish.

Princess Narelle and Lively Too were close up next.

The Mark and Stanley Steamer, candidates for the Jim Ferguson Pace on Saturday, shaped well by providing the quinella in the first two-year-old pacers’

heat over 2000 m. The Mark, a three-quarter brother to The Sting, led throughout, winning by two lengths in 2min 44.55, running his last 800 m in Imin 0.4 s and his closing 400 m in 29.45. Stanley Steamer tracked him throughout and was travelling well at the finish. The second two-year-old pacers’ heat was won impressively by Nugent du Jour, a son of Plat du Jour and Nugent Royale, in Peter Ryder’s Christchurch team. Back early, the grandson of Lady Nugent moved up to dispute the pace with Dazzler from 500 m and came clear to win by four lengths, recording the same time as the winner of the first heat. The leaders ran their closing 400 m in 29.55. Joe Junior enhanced his prospects for the Winter Trot on Saturday when he finished well late to shade Fidelis at the end of the Cl trotters’ heat in 3min 36.75, the leaders quickening over the last 400 m in 30.55. Gaiety (CO pacers, 3min 31.25, last 400 m in 29.65), Lillolkid (Cl pacers, 3min 34.65) and Reb’s Star (CO trotters, 3min 41.95), were other New Zealand Metropolitan candidates to win yesterday.
