AUSTRALIA Scramble for scrip

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed sharply higher, pushed up by a shortage of scrip as institutional buyers scrambled to fill portfolios, brokers said. They said prices jumped in early trading in spite of uninspiring news from abroad overnight as investors found themselves short-stocked after being sidelined in recent days by uncertainty surrounding the tax summit in Canberra and the forthcoming Federal budget.
