G.M.-Alfa Romeo venture possible

General Motors and Alfa Romeo are in the third month of discussions which could lead to a joint venture. With ever-increasing losses, Alfa Romeo is in trouble. The company has the capacity to produce 400,000 cars a year, but produced less than half that number last year. It has been suggested that if the General Motors-Alfa Romeo venture goes ahead, the Italians might produce engines for the Pontiac division of General Motors or produce a special model to be sold by General Motors

in the United States. Alfa Romeo is already engaged in a joint venture with Nissan, assembling the Arna from components imported from Japan, but the venture appears to be struggling and Nissan is unlikely to increase its involvement in the project. The Chrysler Corporation had discussions with Alfa Romeo, but Lee lacocca, Chrysler’s top man, has said that he is not interested in spending five years getting the Italian company back on the right track and into profit again.
