Badminton success for Canterbury

Both Canterbury teams have C’Ted for the South Island in the under 18 junior provincial badminton championships with recent victories in zone play. The Canterbury A team was far too strong in the South Island zone one contest at Picton, winning its three matches against the West Coast, Nelson and Marlborough, 16-0. The team members were Greg Bray, Jason Mitchell, Brett Gilmore, Raymond Too, Lyndal Smith, Robyn Haley, Julie Anderson and Mary Jane Anderson.So strong was the Canterbury team that in the three contests it dropped just one set, Bray and Gilmore conceding the opening game in their top , boys doubles match against the Nelson pair, Newton and Hiscoke. The Canterbury B team travelled to Invercargill for

the zone two competition, and played four matches in just over a day. Canterbury suffered one defeat, to Southland, 13-3, but recorded victories over North Otago, 13-3, Otago, 9-7, and South Canterbury, 124. Canterbury’s team was Glen Allsop, Kim Calver, John Powell, Luke Strongman, Clayton Young, Lara Aitcheson, Rachael Bright, Kiri Maraki, Anna Tipping and Lisa Williams. ; < As the zone runner-up, Canterbury B will meet Canterbury A at the South Island finals on July 27 in Dunedin. The zone two winner, Southland, will play the zone one runner-up, Nelson. The winners will then play off for the right to compete in the New Zealand final at Hamilton on August 26-27.
