Of note
Southland has not had its hands on the Ranfurly Shield for 26 years. But it does have an impressive number of shield achievements to its credit. It was the first South Island union to win the log of wood, and it has won it on five occasions. It lost the shield and won it back in the same season, and it once beat a mighty Wairarapa side which fielded 11 All Blacks. It went through a shield season without having its line crossed, and it once defended the trophy on a pitch covered in snow. It is also one of the few unions to have taken the shield on tour.
