12 ‘Wild Geese II' winners

The Famous Prisoners Quiz proved so successful, with a very large number of people answering the questions correctly, that Kerridge Odeon has agreed to award a dozen double passes, instead of six, to the first 12 correct entries opened, to see “Wild Geese II,” which will start at the Westend tomorrow. The answers to the questions, about which film stars played famous personalities in well-known films, were: 1. Bette Davis played Henriette Deluzy-Desportes in “All This and Heaven Too.” 2. Genevieve Bujold played Anne Boleyn in ’‘Anne of the Thousand Days.” 3. Susan Hayward played Barbara Graham in “I Want to Live.” 4. Katherine Hepburn played Eleanor of Aquitaine in “The Lion in Winter.” 5. Michael Jayston played Tsar Nicholas II in “Nicholas and Alexandra.” 6. Vanessa Redgrave played the title role in “Mary Queen of Scots.” The 12 winners are Gary J. Fox, of Christchurch 2; Richard W. Hlavac, Chch 5; Sheila Lovell, Lyttleton; Lyndon Bowden, Chch 5; John Knight, Rakaia; Craig Neville, Chch 5; A. A. Mansell, Shirley; M. D. Ekensteen, Papanui; J. C. Bateman, Chch 1; P. The winners will be able to pick up their double passes at the Westend when they go to see “Wild Geese II” by presenting some suitable identification. The most interesting letter came from Gary Fox, who included the following background information

about the above films and stars:

“It is interesting to note (for trivia buffs or Oscar freaks) that of the stars mentioned, Susan Hayward and Katherine Hepburn won the best actress Academy Award for their performances; Genevieve Bujold and Vanessa Redgrave were nominated best actress for their roles; while Barbara O’Neil rated best supporting actress nomination for ‘All This and Heaven Too.’ “Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole were nominated as best actor for their respective roles; and Anthony Quayle, in ‘Anne of the Thousand Days,’ received a nomination as best supporting actor. “Apart from ‘I want to Live’ and ‘Mary Queen of

Scots,’ the four other films were nominated for best.. picture. ; “The moral must be: it» may not be much fun being “ a prisoner in real life, but. for actors and actresses,;, you may easily receive an Oscar for your sentence — or at least a nomination. “Of them all, I personally enjoyed (‘endured’ might be , a better word) Miss Hayward’s performance the; most; while Hepburn’s delightful over-acting as Eleanor was a tour-de-force. “Hayward was also outstanding, and possibly deserved the Oscar more for her portrayal of Lillian Roth in 1955’s ‘l’ll Cry Tomorrow,’ in which she was another type of prisoner — one caught up in the toils of alcoholism.”
