Former Chch girl wins place in U.S. drill team

By LOIS TUREI A former Christchurch schoolgirl has managed to achieve in the United States what most American girls can only dream about. Amanda Milligan, aged 16, who went to the United States with her family about two years ago, has earned a place in the All American Drill Team. “It’s sort of a cross between marching and cheerleading,” she said yesterday.

Miss Milligan is now on holiday with her parents in Christchurch and is preparing for a trip to Japan with the team at the end of the month. She says her selection for the team has been the envy of school friends in the United States and New Zealand, and an honour which she cherishes. She is one of only three girls from California to be chosen for the 50-member team. Yet she had no. marching

or cheerleading experience before moving to the United States. Her grandmother, Mrs May Payne, of Shirley, claims to be her biggest admirer. “I didn’t really know what this drill team was all about before. I’m so proud of her,” she said. Mrs Payne hopes that one day she will be able to travel to the United States to watch her granddaughter perform.
