GST proposals
Sir,—Mr lan Orchard’s arguments for GST are almost credible (“The Press,” July 1), but he also says he hopes Mr Douglas will decrease income tax by more than the GST collected. When we see how many promises have been broken by this Labour Government we will find that eventually we will be worse off. Other points against GST are: it is inflationary; it enlarges the bureaucracy; it is expensive to collect and police; it increases unproductive work by way of -accountants, extra office staff, acquisition of computers etc.; no country with a VAT-type tax has managed to decrease its deficit; the tax has led to massive evasion of VAT through a black market, bogus exports which result in reimbursements of the tax, exchange of services in lieu of payment etc.—Yours, etc., P. A. VAN DUGTEREN. July 1, 1985.
