Aust, wins test

NZPA-Reuter London Australia survived further alarms to win the second cricket test against England by four wickets on the fifth and final day at Lord’s yesterday.

A sixth wicket partnership of 51 by the captain, Allan Border, and the wicketkeeper, Wayne Phillips, enabled Australia to level the six-match series 1-1.

Border, who hit 196 in the first innings, scored an unbeaten 41 to steer his team through a crisis. The Australians, needing 127 to win, were reduced to 46 for

three overnight and were shaken again yesterday morning when Kepler Wessels was run out for 28 and David Boon was bowled by Phil Edmonds for one. Australia was 65 for five at that stage but Phillips hit 29 coolly and positively before he tried to cut John Emburey and was caught by Edmonds to make the score 116 for six. Simon O’Donnell hit Edmonds for a straight six and on-drove him for two in the same over to complete victory at 127 for six. The third test will start in Nottingham on July 11.
