Fire-fighting spell for ambulancemen
Christchurch ambulancemen temporarily became fire-fighters when they attended an accident on the Summit Road about 7.50 p.m. yesterday. A passing motorist had earlier hauled a man from a late-model sports car which had gone off the road near the Sugarloaf transmitter. The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, was suffering from smoke inhalation but was otherwise not hurt. An electrical short-circuit
apparently started a fire in the crashed car, said a St John Ambulance Association spokesman. When ambulance officers arrived at the scene the fire had spread to grass. They beat it with blankets to stop it from getting out of control. The Fire Service received a call soon after, and two engines sent quickly put out the fire. The car, however, was badly damaged and the police are investigating what caused the accident
