N.Z.-bred juvenile colt devastating
By JEFF SCOTT The former New Zealand juvenile colt, Smooth Falcon, was successful in the $30,000 Waratah Mobile Stakes in track record time at Harold Park, Sydney, on Friday evening. After drawing the outside of the second row, Smooth Falcon moved up with a lap to run and drew out to win by 10 metres, pacing the 1960 m journey in 2min 26.65, a dashing mile rate of 2min 00.45, breaking his own agerecord for the distance. It was Smooth Falcon’s third win in as many starts since joining Bob Knight’s Melbourne stable after being purchased from Peter McMillan’s Matamata team last year. He had four starts in New Zealand for McMillan’s stable, winning second-up at Alexandra Park in October
in 2min 3.8 s (mile) and recording a fourth in his final start here at Auckland on November 4. Smooth Falcon has broken two-year-old records in all three Australian starts, all at Harold Park. In his debut there on April 12, he rated 2min 40.5 s for 1960 m (winning by 30m), then a week later he broke Nicotine Prince’s longstanding mile race record by winning in 2min 0.3 s (0.1 of a second inside the former’s time). Friday night’s run compared more than favourably with that of Karamea Duplicity, an InterDominion heat winner at Moonee Valley, which recorded 2min 28s for the same distance. Former New Zealanders dominated the Waratah Stakes finish with My Light-
ning Blue (Lonero-Light-ning) running second, and the Canterbury-bred, The Rio Star (Stanley RioDouble Frost) fourth.
Smooth Falcon has breeding to match his ability. By New Zealand’s leading sire this season, Smooth Fella, he is a brother to the wellperformed North Island mare, Foxy Lady (seven wins), and also to Berndon Star. Their dam Tata Matapo, is a half-sister to the former fine mare, Black Watch, which has left the fine performers, Tay Bridge (Imin 59.75), Remarkable (Imin 55.8 s in America) and Bardon Bridge, among others.
Tata Matapo (Tudor Han-over-Rosehaven) was unraced due to blindness and is a permanent resident at Yankee Lodge Stud, Matamata.
