In the Glen steps lively in frost

By

J. J. BOYLE

In the Glen and Hotu Hui Lad, rival candidates for the Whyte Handicap at Trentham on Saturday had footing quite unlike the usual brand for a Wellington winter meeting when they galloped at Riccarton yesterday. The No 1 grass had been firmed by a frost, which allowed In the Glen to scurry over 800 in 47.6. Later Hotu Hui Lad completed the same trip in 49.8. In the Glen performed well for a sixth when she was taken to Trentham for the Cuddle Stakes in May

and could adapt well to different footing in Saturday’s $15,000 race. Hotu Hui Lad earned a start at Trentham after a battling third behind Chook a Rook at Oamaru on June 17. Black Arrow, a third Canterbury Whyte Handicap contender, was taken north on Monday. He will be ridden by his trainer, Ron McCann, who will fly north on Friday night after riding at the Timaru meeting. In the Glen’s stablemate Samasaan finished his work in the grass yesterday by running 800 m in 49.8. He

appears to have thrived since his third at Ashburton. Pokare and Janse Lee hurried in from the 800 in 47.2 and Vic’s Lass returned 48. Cappiemore gave a competent display in the hands of Perry Thomas to lead Prinz Eugen by three lengths ending a run over eight hurdles. Prinz Eugen started with a clear lead, but Cappiemore closed the gap easily at about half way and drew out close to the end. Cappiemore will make his hurdling debut at the Timaru meeting on Friday.
