Bryndwr beaten in A grade badminton

Bryndwr-Y.M.C.A. suffered its first loss of the A grade inter-club badminton competition this week which now opens up the battle for the 1985 title. The Bryndwr men, Mark Chambers and Mark Reid, needed to beat South Brighton’s combination of Neil Barns and Prasanna Gulasekharam in straight games to force a countback on individual points. Once Barns and Gulasekharam won the opening game. South Brighton was assured of victory, which was eventually achieved, 11 games to 10. With that loss, Bryndwr’s lead in the points table was chopped back from 16 points to seven. Bryndwr was weakened by the absence of its in-form woman, Paula Thorpe. However, her replacement, Fiona Pizzey, won her match, against Bev Thorpe, and combined successfully with Diana Lonie. Where Miss Thorpe’s absence might have been crucial was in the mixed doubles. With Mark Chambers, she has won six of eight mixed matches this winter. Earlier, Chambers and Mark Reid had suffered singles defeats, which put South Brighton firmly on the way to its upset win. Railway I is in second place, having walloped Christchurch I, 7-1. Robyn Haley recorded Christchurch’s solitary win, beating Christine Erikson. The return of Jane Clarke and Graham Sercombe ruled out the prospect of any surprises in the outcome. Hagley I had the biggest win of the round, whitewashing its No. 2 team, which lies firmly entrenched at the bottom of the table. Christchurch II had its fourth win of the competition, beating Railway 11, 6-2. Three singles wins proved the ideal base for the young Christchurch team.
