Soviet sailors seek bargains
Second-hand sewing machines to take back to the Soviet Union are still a favourite purchase for Russian sailors, both men and women, when they go ashore at Lyttelton. Other items come and go in S'arity, according to a Lyt-shop-owner. “They (the Russians) have to watch their money pretty carefully,” she said. “A lot of the ordinary sailors seem to have only about $lO to spend. You can tell the officers because they have more money.” Much in vogue with the Russians before last Christmas were cheap music boxes, especially those made in the shape of a car, she said. Popular at prsent were, of all things, teats for babies’ bottles and children’s pencilcases. ARRIVALS Spirit of Free Enterprise (7 a.m.), 1204, Wellington (Pacifica).
