Typhoon hits Strong winds and heavy rain brought down trees, cut off electricity and shattered windows, injuring three people in Tokyo yesterday after Typhoon Irma struck. Irma, with peak winds of 126 km/h, passed through the Tokyo metropolitan area bringing heavy rains and gusty winds. — Tokyo. Toll rises The death toll in Bangladesh from cholera and diarrhoea has reached at least 455 in the wake of last month’s hurricane and tidal waves. At least 200 people have died in the last few days in an outbreak of cholera on Sandwip Island, one of the hardest-hit areas. — Dhaka. 61 dead South Africa yesterday said it had killed 61 Namibian guerrillas in a running battle in southern Angola, hinging to more than 400 the number killed in the area this year. Lieutenant-General George Meiring, commander of the South African security forces in Namibia, said the Windhoek that the operation was a “great success.” — Windhoek Blast recorded Seismic signals from a presumed underground nuclear explosion in the Soviet Union were recorded in Sweden. — Stockholm.
